About Waverton

The suburb of Waverton takes its name from ‘Waverton House’ built by Joseph Purser in 1845 on land purchased from Alexander Berry. Waverton was part of a 524-acre (2.12km2 ) land grant made to Edward Woolstonecraft and his business partner Alexander Berry in 1821. The property was used to receive timber and agricultural produce from Coolangatta. The local train station was known as Bay Road for nearly forty years, after the thoroughfare that crosses the railway line. It was changed to ‘Waverton’ in 1929 and is now classified by the National Trust.

Waverton is located just 4 kilometres North of the City, with the CBD easily accessible via the Bradfield Highway. State transit buses such as the 273 and M20 depart regularly from the area to the City. Waverton Station operates on the North Shore and Northern Line of Sydney’s CityRail and is only five stations or 15 minutes from Central. Various wharfs offer ferry services into the City and Manly. Royal North Shore Hospital and the Mater Hospital are also in very close vicinity.

The surrounding suburbs of North Sydney, Crows Nest and Lane Cove offer a variety of fine public and private schools. Private schools include St Ignatius College and the Shore School for boys, while Loreto Kirribilli, Wenona and Monte provide private education for girls. Public schools include North Sydney Boys and Girls, North Sydney Demonstration School, Cammeray Primary, and Lane Cove Public. The Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE (North Sydney College) is also situated locally on the Pacific Highway.

Waverton and its surrounding suburbs provide a variety of recreational options including basketball at the ‘Roof Top’ Basketball Centre, lawn bowls at ‘The Greens’ in North Sydney, 9 holes at Cammeray Golf Club and laps at North Sydney Olympic Pool. Waverton Park and Balls Head Reserve offer some fantastic foreshore walks and views of the city. They are also one of the most significant aboriginal sites in North Sydney.

Waverton has a range of neighbourhood shops providing the essentials and is well known for its charming coffee shops. North Sydney’s Greenwood Plaza and Berry Square feature specialty food and fashion stores.

What we love about Waverton:

It’s beautiful relaxed feel whilst being so close to the CBD is a massive win for the Lower North Shore suburb.

Its relatively quiet on the weekends, so a stroll around the area and down to the foreshore is a must.
