What Does an Election Mean for Real Estate?
As a politics enthusiast, I relish election night television coverage and spend the evening glued to reports. However, as a real estate professional, I’m not so enamoured. While there is no real statistical proof that elections—or speculation about polling dates—spook buyers, anecdotal evidence suggests that those who have shown caution during a sales campaign become even more so. This was evident in the lead-up to the PM naming the day, when many experienced agents bemoaned the period and its uncertainty. The truism is that all markets, not just real estate markets, don’t like uncertainty. Buyers and sellers may adopt a “wait and see” approach, delaying major financial decisions until the political landscape becomes clearer. So now that we know the date, we can all look forward to planning sales campaigns with more confidence.
